About us

"

Nimavert is the product of an animated discussion between two managing directors, Nico Coen and Maarten Debie, at a barbecue in the summer of 2010. We were wondering why so many insects are consumed all over the world, while it seems as if the market in Western Europe is not ready for this yet. A little research and lots of brainstorming sessions made us decide that the time was ripe to roll up our sleeves and cultivate carious species of insects in our own garage and cellar .

The result? Six years of trial and error. Until we decided at the end of 2016 to stop breeding the insects ourselves, but to process them into food products. We decided to focus entirely on mealworms for the time being because that was what we were studying at that point in time. And so Nimavert was established. After many tests and trials, we developed a number of mealworm-based products. At the end of 2019, we acquired Little Food, which offered a full range of cricket-based products. Our aperitif line is complete, but we keep looking for new products.

The name Nimavert is contraction of the names of the business owners, Nico and Maarten, and the French word ‘vert’. The latter can also be interpreted phonetically as ‘ver’ (the French word for worm) as well as ‘vert’ (green and ecologically friendly).

""Nimavert was founded for everyone who is curious about how insects taste and who is convinced that they deserve to be included in our diet.""

Nimavert was founded for everyone who is curious about how insects taste and who is convinced that they deserve to be included in our diet. After all, insects, and mealworms in particular, are an alternative, ecological source of and alternative to proteins, vitamins and minerals. Insect-based products and dishes do not have to look strange or be complicated at all. The only thing that matters is the taste.
